WhatsApp End-to-End Encrypted Cloud Backups to Roll Out Soon for Android, iOS Users

WhatsApp is set to soon roll out end-to-end encrypted cloud backups on Android and iOS. The new move will help users keep their chats end-to-end encrypted even when they are a part of WhatsApp backups stored on a cloud service such as Apple iCloud or Google Drive. WhatsApp has worked from scratch to enable anticipated end-to-end encrypted backup support for its users. Notably, the instant messaging app has been offering end-to-end encrypted messages on its platform since 2016, and the update is essentially an expansion of that level of security to chat backups. Facebook  CEO Mark Zuckerberg on Friday  announced  through a post on the platform that  WhatsApp  has completed building end-to-end encrypted backups and will soon begin rolling out the new layer of privacy and security protection to users. The end-to-end encrypted backups will be available as an optional feature that users need to manually enable on the app. It will be rolled out to both  Android  and  iOS  devices in the co

App Store Can Not Ban Alternative Payments, Judge Rules in Epic vs Apple

Apple can not stop developers from offering third party payments that avoid the fees that it charges for in-app purchases, according to the ruling of the judge in the Epic vs Apple case that has been delivered after several months of deliberations. Apple can not stop developers from including external links that direct customers to purchasing mechanisms in addition to in-app purchasing, and developers can also communicate with customers through points of contact obtained voluntarily from customers through account registration. Last year, Epic updated the Fortnite add with its own in-app payment system, bypassing Apple, and it was then removed from the App Store for violating its policies. This led to the antitrust lawsuit from Epic. A similar case is also set to take place against  Google . According to the  injunction  uploaded by  The Verge , the court did not find Apple to be a monopolist, and as noted in  Protocol , Apple has emerged from the ruling largely unscathed, but with on

WhatsApp issued second-largest GDPR fine of €225m

WhatsApp has been fined €225m (£193m) by Ireland's data watchdog for breaching privacy regulations. It is the largest fine ever from the Irish Data Protection Commission, and the second-highest under EU GDPR rules. Facebook, which owns WhatsApp, has its EU headquarters is in Ireland, and the Irish regulator is the lead authority for the tech giant in Europe. WhatsApp said it disagrees with the decision, and the severity of the fine, and plans to appeal. The fine relates to an investigation which began in 2018, about whether WhatsApp had been transparent enough about how it handles information. The issues involved were highly technical, including whether WhatsApp supplied enough information to users about how their data was processed and if its privacy policies were clear enough. Those policies have since been updated several times. "WhatsApp is committed to providing a secure and private service," a company spokesperson said. "We have worked to ensure the informati

Apple employees make US labour watchdog complaints

Two employee complaints against Apple are being considered by the US National Labor Relations Board (NLRB). One alleges retaliation for raising safety concerns, while the other focuses on alleged suppression of questions about pay equity. Apple has declined to comment on individual cases, but says it investigates when a concern is raised. The complaints come as an online campaign says it's received more than 600 stories of workplace problems. The NLRB  is an independent US agency which protects the rights of private sector employees to join together to improve their wages and working conditions, and to prevent unfair labour practices. It will look into the so-called "Charge against Employer" filings before deciding whether to take further action. The charges were filed on 26 August and 1 September with the NLRB office in Oakland, California. Equal pay The 1 September charge was filed by an Apple software engineer, Cher Scarlett, who alleges that the company suppressed a
